Bird Sounds and Recording
- Xeno-Canto: simply the best website for bird sounds on the internet.
- Macaulay Libray of Natural Sounds: maintained by Cornell University, this is the largest collection of animal sounds on the planet. While I find their website to be far less user friendly than that of Xeno-Canto, this is still an invaluable resource when researching bird sounds.
- Borror Labratory of Bioacoustics: maintained by Ohio State University, this is another large collection of bird sounds. Unfortunately this site is also not terribly user friendly.
- Earbirding.com: this excellent blog maintained by Nathan Pieplow has frequent posts covering nearly the gamut when it comes to bird sounds, recording, and equipment and techniques. I also occasionally write posts here.
- The Internet Bird Collection: while in general I would recommend this site more for its fantastic collection of bird photos and videos, it does have some sounds as well.
General Birding Sites
- Neotropical Birds: while still in its infancy at the moment, when finished this site will be just about the best on the entire internet, rivaled only by Xeno-Canto. Even now it already contains a plethora of useful information.
- Birds of North America: for a relatively small subscription fee you can access this site, the most complete collection of information on bird species that breed in North America. Highly recommended.
- Surfbirds: your one stop source for everything from rarity photos to identification articles to listing to Trip Reports. An excellent website.
- Birdingonthe.net: what Surfbirds is to general birding this site is to North American birding listservs. Need to find out what's being seen in some random state? This is the site for you.
- Travelingbirder: this is probably the best collection of birding trip reports on the planet, and a highly recommended stop if you are planning on birding, well, anywhere.
- South American Checklist Committee: run by the AOU, the SACC has become the most widely accepted authority on avian taxonomy in South America. This site has lots of useful information on taxonomic proposals in addition to the official checklist.
- Searchable Ornithological Research Archive (SORA): with links to journal articles from many of the leading ornitholgical publications (mostly pre-2001), this is an invaluable resource if you're looking for scholarly research on birds.
Colorado Birding Sites
- Colorado County Birding: by far the best site for birding information in Colorado. Details on birding sites in all 64 counties, county checklists, and information on specialties make this one of the best resources for the Colorado birder.
- Colorado Field Ornithologists: this is Colorado's state-wide birder organization, publisher of the excellent Colorado Birds, and maintainer of the Colorado Bird Records Committee.
